Risk assessment

Before I shoot my music video I have gone to the locations were I will be filming and have looked at the dangers that may be included whilst we are filming and by looking at these problems now I can minimise the danger that we face when we make the music video.

House scenes
  • Risk of Falling off the ladder whilst doing the high angled shot in the bed.
  • Risk of falling over electrical wires that are attached to the camera.
  • Risk of burns from the kettle.
To prevent a risk of falling off the ladder during the high angled bed scene I will check the ladders thoroughly before using them and make sure someone is holding me for balance whilst climbing them. The risk of tripping over wires is very big so I will try and keep the wires away from people as much as possible and make sure everyone knows that there are wires in the area. The kettle will only be put on for a short amount of time so it is not at its maximum temperature so the risk of burning is reduced dramatically.
    Car scene
  • Risk of collision
Melanie is a fully insured driver and has been driving for over a year. she is a very safe driver and make sure everyone "clunk click every trip" her car is fitted with 2 airbags so if the car was to crash then we both would have some form of protection. I will try and not get in Mel's way or distract her in any way whilst filming in the car, and if it does then the scene will be removed. Safety first!

Forshore scene

  • Risk of falling in the river
  • Risk of falling over on the rocks
  • Risk of hypothermia

I planned to go to the forshore when the tide was out so there would be no risk of falling in, I kept Melanie as far back from the water as possible just in case a ship caused a large wave as it passed which they do on hourly occasion. The forshore is very dangerous and many people cockle over, this is why I wanted my artist to wear flat shes so this would be reduced. I asked my artist to be careful as she walked and watched her every move. The day of filming was a very very cold afternoon so my artist could not stick with just her white dress and had to wear a coat, as soon as the filming was done, she got into the blanket I bought and had a cup of tea out of a flask.
Pier scene
  • Risk of collapse
  • Risk of falling into the river
  • Risk falling in the cracks
  • Risk of hypothermia.
Even though the Pier has been renovated over the years it still poses a great danger to the public, many people die falling into the water. The flowers was there for a young man who died only months earlier after falling into the river. I kept my artist away from edges of the pier that looks unsafe and kept her on the renovated side of the pier. There was a rail to stop people from falling in but I told my artist to hold onto the rail at most times when near the edge. As the pier is made of wood some of the gaps between each piece of wood can be large so I warned my actress of the problems this could face and she said she would watch out for the cracks. As the filming of the pier was done earlier in the day it was much colder then the already cold forshore scene so every 5 minutes I had to let me artist get warmed up again.

Narrative and conventions of my Music Video

My Music video will have quite a unique and different Narrative to most other music videos as it will have a unique twist and this is because how I have interpreted the Lyrics of the song. The song will begin with my artist fast asleep and she is awoken by a sudden and loud noise, she will then arise from her bed and sit upright in a confused state, She will then look at the opposite side of her bed to find a boy laid next to her. This is when the music will start to play as she gets up to go to brush her teeth in the Bathroom, she will then return to the bedroom and then she will start to remember how and why she had woken up next to a boy she did not know. It now becomes her obsession to discover why she was put into this position. She then goes down stairs and gets some food, she then hears the door slam and she then goes onto the social networking site "Facebook" and discovers photos of herself with the boy then she begins to remember what happened. She is then walks into the next shot from the other shot this will help with continuity editing she is then in a new location which will be of her walking down a country path and near the edge of a river, this will be done on a very bright day so the sun will reflect off the river and give it a magically element to it. The scene will end with her sat on a pier and the camera circles her and it ends with her turning around and then it will go back to the beginning of the shoot as the beginning of the song is the same as the end of the song. I believe this will be a good narrative to use. The conventions of my music video will have a romantic but also an upset element to it, with my actress being very angelic and innocent but an edge of worry and distress. I will use strong colours at the begging but by the end it will be dull until she turns around and suddenly it will turn back colourful and turn white and then go back to end. The mise en scene will be very dynamic but also very simple. The clothes will be very vintage but will stay continuous except from the bedroom scene and the rest of the music video. There will also be a scene of her on a bike near the river edge showing her wanting to escape and be alone. The element of nature and the outdoors will be used a lot and the bike will be vintage adding to her not being the same as others. The editing of my music video will have an array of editing such as quick cuts, fades, dissolves and digital effects that will give the video an edge and a high standard of of production.

Props, location, costume, makeup and artist photos

This bike is similar to the bike that I will be using in my music Video. The bike I will be using will be in white. I believe it will add a more vintage feel to my video. My artist will be seen to ride the bike in the location shown below. I want my artist to ride the bike very elegantly. I will get shots of the bike as she rides it to the final destination which will be of the pier near the river humber and on Hessle forshaw. The camera shots for following the bike will be a tracking shot and extreme long shots. this showing that she is travelling and that she is going to go somewhere.

This is the location for part of my music video, It is the Hessle foreshore near the Humber Bridge, I will be doing my filming here during a sunny morning or afternoon as the sun reflects off the river and gives it an almost magical look to it. This will be during the travelling scene when she is riding her bike to the river pier. I will be closely monitering the tide because in the picture you can see the rocks and the pebbles but this is when the tide is out. I want my artist to be able to walk freely down onto the pebbles, so this will be closely monitored.
This is the Humber Pier were the ferries used to transport people across the Humber when the Humber bridge was not in existence. This is a lonely and desolate place, were the hustle and bustle of people used to be but now it is a place were not many people go. This is why I have chosen this scene to be the ending of my video, It is to symbolise a changing of mood and tranquillity.
These are the kind of dresses that I want my artist to wear during the shoot, they are both fashionable and also symbolic. As you can tell these famous actresses wear this certain type of dress. It is neither long or short showing a sign of femininity but also a sign of rebellion. They are not worn with anything else which is simplicity which I aim for with my Costume. But white also Symbolises Innocence which will be seen in my music Video. My artist will also wear a minimum amount of makeup.
Unfortunately my pride and joy has had to be sent off for repairs so instead of having the bike I will be using my artists car. I don't think it will make much of a difference to my narrative, but I have had to incorporate the car into my Narrative. The car is cool and new and also is a mode of transport which was one of my main key ideas that the artist needs to be seen moving and travelling. I will be shooting from the passenger side and hopefully get some point of view shots.

I want my music video to also be appealing to wider audiences, as music videos tend to be in the city but I want to break this tradition and choose a more alternative location and this was a country lane. as I do not have the bike no more it has to be able to fit a car down it. I want the road to be full of hedges and greenery to show that my artist is getting away from society. Using traditional English settings also will appeal to audiences from different countries as they like English heritages.

This is Mel, She will be the actress in my Music video. I picked Melanie because she does drama both academically and also professionally. Choosing my artist was one of the most crucial things that I needed to think about. I believe Mel offers so much potential for my music video. I did some test shoots with Melanie to see if she was up the standard of my music video and I believe she is. I wanted an actress who could uphold a performance whilst showing emotion. Melanie is also the same age as my target audience. I have told Mel that she will need to wear a Pacific dress code and also not be able to wear makeup. I told her that she was wear light makeup but to make it look as if she had been sleeping, giving her a look of innocence, natural beauty and also a sign that she has been drinking on a night out. Mel is very beautiful and in fit shape like most of the performers in music videos. I will be working closely with Melanie on the performance I require her to do in the music video but also what kind of emotions I want to see from Mel. I believe I have chosen a good actress to star in my music video.... (4 days later update) Mel has found a white dress which fits with my specification. If you look at the images above of the three dresses it is the same shape as picture 3 but has the same pattern and look as picture 2. She has also got the flat shoes for the shoot. I have told Mel also to wear only a little amount of Jewelry

This is the kind of look that I want Mel to have for the shoot. This look symbolises innocence and natural beauty. It also depicts on how society does not usually see girls. I want Mel to look as if she has had a heavy night out, so the use of makeup and performance is key to making this clear to the audience. I have told Mel not to wear foundation but wear a heavy use of eyeliner but then lightly smudge it so it looks like this image. Hair will have to be wild and out of control, this will be done by the use of lots of hairspray. I believe that this look will create more of an intense and emotional feel with the audience. I will be using many close up shots of Mel during the recording of the video. I have taken into account that makeup, costume and hair will take time before the shoot so I have incorporated this into my schedule for the day of the shoot.

Update on progress and research

At the moment I am coming to the end of my research and nearly ready to start filming, I am currently working with my artist to get her adapted to the lyrics and song and let her know about the Narrative and plot of the music video and also what she will be required to do and were the shots will be done. I am also working on my storyboards so I know how long the shots will last, what camera shots I will use and what will be happening with the performance of my artist. I will be doing three seperate posts very soon to show who my artist is and why she is right to be in my music video, the locations of my shots and why I beleive they will look right for my artist to be positioned in and finally the main props in my music video which will bring identity and meaning to my music video.

Animatic for Music Video

This is the animatic for my Music video. I have created this to help me get a clear idea of what I want things to look like when I am shooting the and editing the real music video. By doing the anamatic it has allowed me to see how scenes will move into the following shots and see if the continuity will remain the same and also if my narrative can be put into the song in the demanding 3 minutes of music that I have chosen. Overall I believe it will give me additional help when it comes to producing and editing the video and also allow me to get a real feel of what my Music video will look nearer the time of completion. I want to stay as close to this Anamatic as possible but I am willing to compromise if troubles arise.

Target audience

The target audience for my Media product will be aimed at teenagers and young adults. This can be seen by the people who buy the music and listen to it on a daily basis. This age group is Kean and enthusiastic about new things which is key to making my Media products a success. Also this age group is keenly in touch with watching new technology. from my research 9 out of 10 people watch Music videos on a weekly basis. Also they can also make an artist famous because this is the age when young people become emotionally attached to artist such as Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, florence and the machine and many other artists that have a large fan base. They also usually have spare money to buy songs on Itunes and buy albums. This is why I believe that this is a very good target audience to work with.

Background knowledge on Marina and the diamonds

Marina was born in Wales in 1985 and sings in a new wave/Indie style. She writes all of her own songs and is multi talented in the field of music and she has been a proffesional singer since 2007 and has very popular thougout the world. she is part of the Neon Gold, 679 and chop shop labels. She has a very popular audience in both the United kingdom, United states and also Internationaly. I personally like Marina and the Diamonds because when she writes a song she does not write about real things that happens in society and does not try to please people. She has made numerous succsessful music videos. The song that I have chosen is not one of Marina and the Diamonds most successful songs nor video but I beleive that If I use my own initutive I can excell Marina and the Diamonds origianal music video. She has a unique voice which is very youthful but also very strong and powerful. Her music brings out many of emotions in people. Her most famous song has to be "I am not a robot" the image below is a clip of her music video. It just shows how diffrent and diverse she is then most artists around today.
