Editing

I am currently working on my music video on the editing suite in the college. It is a slow process but I have picked up the basics of what to do and were to put things. I have put all of my scenes in sync to the music but now I want to focus on editing things such as lighting and cinematography. I am only choosing the best scenes from my filming and asking for feedback all the way though the process to see what people think and feel about my music video. It should be completed when we arrive back to college in 2012.

Shooting

My shooting was done over a 6 hour period. I was able to get most of my filming done in one day as the weather remained good enough to continue shooting throughout the day, this helped with continuity making the scenes look more realistic. By sticking to the Risk assessment I have previously done it allowed the shoot to be as safe as possible without risk of any danger to myself and also my artist. Makeup and costume went accordingly and my artist performed very well. The weather was perfect for the day of the shoot and it went really smoothly. The weather was extremly windy so there was an unbalance in holiding the steady cam, there was a slight problem with traffic but we just went over what the script and looked at the animatic on our phones to make sure we was in sync and also to listen to the song whilst filming. I shall be editing over the next couple of months.

Risk assessment

Before I shoot my music video I have gone to the locations were I will be filming and have looked at the dangers that may be included whilst we are filming and by looking at these problems now I can minimise the danger that we face when we make the music video.

House scenes
  • Risk of Falling off the ladder whilst doing the high angled shot in the bed.
  • Risk of falling over electrical wires that are attached to the camera.
  • Risk of burns from the kettle.
To prevent a risk of falling off the ladder during the high angled bed scene I will check the ladders thoroughly before using them and make sure someone is holding me for balance whilst climbing them. The risk of tripping over wires is very big so I will try and keep the wires away from people as much as possible and make sure everyone knows that there are wires in the area. The kettle will only be put on for a short amount of time so it is not at its maximum temperature so the risk of burning is reduced dramatically.
    Car scene
  • Risk of collision
Melanie is a fully insured driver and has been driving for over a year. she is a very safe driver and make sure everyone "clunk click every trip" her car is fitted with 2 airbags so if the car was to crash then we both would have some form of protection. I will try and not get in Mel's way or distract her in any way whilst filming in the car, and if it does then the scene will be removed. Safety first!

Forshore scene

  • Risk of falling in the river
  • Risk of falling over on the rocks
  • Risk of hypothermia

I planned to go to the forshore when the tide was out so there would be no risk of falling in, I kept Melanie as far back from the water as possible just in case a ship caused a large wave as it passed which they do on hourly occasion. The forshore is very dangerous and many people cockle over, this is why I wanted my artist to wear flat shes so this would be reduced. I asked my artist to be careful as she walked and watched her every move. The day of filming was a very very cold afternoon so my artist could not stick with just her white dress and had to wear a coat, as soon as the filming was done, she got into the blanket I bought and had a cup of tea out of a flask.
Pier scene
  • Risk of collapse
  • Risk of falling into the river
  • Risk falling in the cracks
  • Risk of hypothermia.
Even though the Pier has been renovated over the years it still poses a great danger to the public, many people die falling into the water. The flowers was there for a young man who died only months earlier after falling into the river. I kept my artist away from edges of the pier that looks unsafe and kept her on the renovated side of the pier. There was a rail to stop people from falling in but I told my artist to hold onto the rail at most times when near the edge. As the pier is made of wood some of the gaps between each piece of wood can be large so I warned my actress of the problems this could face and she said she would watch out for the cracks. As the filming of the pier was done earlier in the day it was much colder then the already cold forshore scene so every 5 minutes I had to let me artist get warmed up again.

Narrative and conventions of my Music Video

My Music video will have quite a unique and different Narrative to most other music videos as it will have a unique twist and this is because how I have interpreted the Lyrics of the song. The song will begin with my artist fast asleep and she is awoken by a sudden and loud noise, she will then arise from her bed and sit upright in a confused state, She will then look at the opposite side of her bed to find a boy laid next to her. This is when the music will start to play as she gets up to go to brush her teeth in the Bathroom, she will then return to the bedroom and then she will start to remember how and why she had woken up next to a boy she did not know. It now becomes her obsession to discover why she was put into this position. She then goes down stairs and gets some food, she then hears the door slam and she then goes onto the social networking site "Facebook" and discovers photos of herself with the boy then she begins to remember what happened. She is then walks into the next shot from the other shot this will help with continuity editing she is then in a new location which will be of her walking down a country path and near the edge of a river, this will be done on a very bright day so the sun will reflect off the river and give it a magically element to it. The scene will end with her sat on a pier and the camera circles her and it ends with her turning around and then it will go back to the beginning of the shoot as the beginning of the song is the same as the end of the song. I believe this will be a good narrative to use. The conventions of my music video will have a romantic but also an upset element to it, with my actress being very angelic and innocent but an edge of worry and distress. I will use strong colours at the begging but by the end it will be dull until she turns around and suddenly it will turn back colourful and turn white and then go back to end. The mise en scene will be very dynamic but also very simple. The clothes will be very vintage but will stay continuous except from the bedroom scene and the rest of the music video. There will also be a scene of her on a bike near the river edge showing her wanting to escape and be alone. The element of nature and the outdoors will be used a lot and the bike will be vintage adding to her not being the same as others. The editing of my music video will have an array of editing such as quick cuts, fades, dissolves and digital effects that will give the video an edge and a high standard of of production.

Props, location, costume, makeup and artist photos

This bike is similar to the bike that I will be using in my music Video. The bike I will be using will be in white. I believe it will add a more vintage feel to my video. My artist will be seen to ride the bike in the location shown below. I want my artist to ride the bike very elegantly. I will get shots of the bike as she rides it to the final destination which will be of the pier near the river humber and on Hessle forshaw. The camera shots for following the bike will be a tracking shot and extreme long shots. this showing that she is travelling and that she is going to go somewhere.

This is the location for part of my music video, It is the Hessle foreshore near the Humber Bridge, I will be doing my filming here during a sunny morning or afternoon as the sun reflects off the river and gives it an almost magical look to it. This will be during the travelling scene when she is riding her bike to the river pier. I will be closely monitering the tide because in the picture you can see the rocks and the pebbles but this is when the tide is out. I want my artist to be able to walk freely down onto the pebbles, so this will be closely monitored.
This is the Humber Pier were the ferries used to transport people across the Humber when the Humber bridge was not in existence. This is a lonely and desolate place, were the hustle and bustle of people used to be but now it is a place were not many people go. This is why I have chosen this scene to be the ending of my video, It is to symbolise a changing of mood and tranquillity.
These are the kind of dresses that I want my artist to wear during the shoot, they are both fashionable and also symbolic. As you can tell these famous actresses wear this certain type of dress. It is neither long or short showing a sign of femininity but also a sign of rebellion. They are not worn with anything else which is simplicity which I aim for with my Costume. But white also Symbolises Innocence which will be seen in my music Video. My artist will also wear a minimum amount of makeup.
Unfortunately my pride and joy has had to be sent off for repairs so instead of having the bike I will be using my artists car. I don't think it will make much of a difference to my narrative, but I have had to incorporate the car into my Narrative. The car is cool and new and also is a mode of transport which was one of my main key ideas that the artist needs to be seen moving and travelling. I will be shooting from the passenger side and hopefully get some point of view shots.

I want my music video to also be appealing to wider audiences, as music videos tend to be in the city but I want to break this tradition and choose a more alternative location and this was a country lane. as I do not have the bike no more it has to be able to fit a car down it. I want the road to be full of hedges and greenery to show that my artist is getting away from society. Using traditional English settings also will appeal to audiences from different countries as they like English heritages.

This is Mel, She will be the actress in my Music video. I picked Melanie because she does drama both academically and also professionally. Choosing my artist was one of the most crucial things that I needed to think about. I believe Mel offers so much potential for my music video. I did some test shoots with Melanie to see if she was up the standard of my music video and I believe she is. I wanted an actress who could uphold a performance whilst showing emotion. Melanie is also the same age as my target audience. I have told Mel that she will need to wear a Pacific dress code and also not be able to wear makeup. I told her that she was wear light makeup but to make it look as if she had been sleeping, giving her a look of innocence, natural beauty and also a sign that she has been drinking on a night out. Mel is very beautiful and in fit shape like most of the performers in music videos. I will be working closely with Melanie on the performance I require her to do in the music video but also what kind of emotions I want to see from Mel. I believe I have chosen a good actress to star in my music video.... (4 days later update) Mel has found a white dress which fits with my specification. If you look at the images above of the three dresses it is the same shape as picture 3 but has the same pattern and look as picture 2. She has also got the flat shoes for the shoot. I have told Mel also to wear only a little amount of Jewelry

This is the kind of look that I want Mel to have for the shoot. This look symbolises innocence and natural beauty. It also depicts on how society does not usually see girls. I want Mel to look as if she has had a heavy night out, so the use of makeup and performance is key to making this clear to the audience. I have told Mel not to wear foundation but wear a heavy use of eyeliner but then lightly smudge it so it looks like this image. Hair will have to be wild and out of control, this will be done by the use of lots of hairspray. I believe that this look will create more of an intense and emotional feel with the audience. I will be using many close up shots of Mel during the recording of the video. I have taken into account that makeup, costume and hair will take time before the shoot so I have incorporated this into my schedule for the day of the shoot.

Update on progress and research

At the moment I am coming to the end of my research and nearly ready to start filming, I am currently working with my artist to get her adapted to the lyrics and song and let her know about the Narrative and plot of the music video and also what she will be required to do and were the shots will be done. I am also working on my storyboards so I know how long the shots will last, what camera shots I will use and what will be happening with the performance of my artist. I will be doing three seperate posts very soon to show who my artist is and why she is right to be in my music video, the locations of my shots and why I beleive they will look right for my artist to be positioned in and finally the main props in my music video which will bring identity and meaning to my music video.

Animatic for Music Video

This is the animatic for my Music video. I have created this to help me get a clear idea of what I want things to look like when I am shooting the and editing the real music video. By doing the anamatic it has allowed me to see how scenes will move into the following shots and see if the continuity will remain the same and also if my narrative can be put into the song in the demanding 3 minutes of music that I have chosen. Overall I believe it will give me additional help when it comes to producing and editing the video and also allow me to get a real feel of what my Music video will look nearer the time of completion. I want to stay as close to this Anamatic as possible but I am willing to compromise if troubles arise.

Target audience

The target audience for my Media product will be aimed at teenagers and young adults. This can be seen by the people who buy the music and listen to it on a daily basis. This age group is Kean and enthusiastic about new things which is key to making my Media products a success. Also this age group is keenly in touch with watching new technology. from my research 9 out of 10 people watch Music videos on a weekly basis. Also they can also make an artist famous because this is the age when young people become emotionally attached to artist such as Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, florence and the machine and many other artists that have a large fan base. They also usually have spare money to buy songs on Itunes and buy albums. This is why I believe that this is a very good target audience to work with.

Background knowledge on Marina and the diamonds

Marina was born in Wales in 1985 and sings in a new wave/Indie style. She writes all of her own songs and is multi talented in the field of music and she has been a proffesional singer since 2007 and has very popular thougout the world. she is part of the Neon Gold, 679 and chop shop labels. She has a very popular audience in both the United kingdom, United states and also Internationaly. I personally like Marina and the Diamonds because when she writes a song she does not write about real things that happens in society and does not try to please people. She has made numerous succsessful music videos. The song that I have chosen is not one of Marina and the Diamonds most successful songs nor video but I beleive that If I use my own initutive I can excell Marina and the Diamonds origianal music video. She has a unique voice which is very youthful but also very strong and powerful. Her music brings out many of emotions in people. Her most famous song has to be "I am not a robot" the image below is a clip of her music video. It just shows how diffrent and diverse she is then most artists around today.

Lyrics analysis for Obsessions

These ae the lyrics for my chosen song. I beleive that they will work extremely well alongside my music video as they incorporate the lyrics. I will try and play on the words such as "sunday wake up" and my artist will wake up. The lyrics are emotional and that is what I want from my audience. The lyrics are also self reflective and my audience will need to be an "active" audience to be able to understand the narrative of my music video. The only thing I will not play on is "Give me a cigarette" as I do not like smoking in any shape or form.

Identify the conventions of your chosen genre?

Their are a wide range of types of Genre of music and this also can be seen with music videos because the possibilities are endless. Each Genre usually has a certain target audience also as they like that form of Genre. I have chosen carefully which Genre of Music as I have looked at statistics online and sales from the leading retailers which Genre is selling the most copies at this very moment and that Genre is Indie and pop. So with this knowledge I will be creating my music video with an Indie stylistic to it. My music video will be about Romance so it will have to embrace this into my music video as well by using visual aspects of romance. The song I have chosen is Obsessions by Marina and the Diamonds and this has a romantic element to it, because if you listen or read the lyrics it is all about someone who has obsessions about someone or something and my Narrative to my music video will have a girl who is searching or running away from an obsession she has for a person or something. There are many conventions within Indie music, for example the music is very laid back and can either be happy or very sad music, it appeals to mostly young people as it is new and fresh and also many of the artists that sing Indie music are usually young teenagers or from early adulthood. My music video will have a fresh feel to it and will be a music video that gets your mind thinking and hopefully have a connection with the audience. Because using the codes of conventions of other music videos and producing my music video so that people can understand what is going on will be key to making my music video successful. Costumes will be key also because Indie people were very vintage clothes often seen in the 50's 60's and 70's, My artist has an array of clothes that she will be able to use so by using the clothes it will also add to the authenticity of my music video and also this will appeal to the audience because girls may aspire to be like my actress and boys may want to be with her.The conventions will help the audience understand what is going on within the narrative.

Describe how you developed your skills in the use of digital technology for media production and evaluate how these skills contributed to your creative decision making. Refer to a range of examples in your answer to show how these skills developed over time.

The course requires you to be open minded and ready to use new and different forms of digital technology. The different forms of digital technology that I used were Blogger, cameras and Photoshop. Using these I could produce and develop my skills in many ways such as, how to use these forms or digital technologies and how to use them in a constructive way to construct and produce my final products.

Blogger was the first thing I was introduced to. It allowed me to put all of my ideas, Planning, essays, photos, videos, scanning work and final products onto the blog. Blogger enabled to put all my ideas together and make a final decision making. It allows you to look back and piece together all of the posts you have made to produce and piece everything together. Blogger helped me develop my skills on how to structure, clearly show my workings out and show it all in chronological order. When I took my photos I could easily upload my photos onto the blog and analyse each photo and write a descriptive analyse of each photo below the photo. When it came to uploading videos to do the LIIAR analysis. Blogger allows you to upload photos so this allowed me to scan things into the computer then publish them onto my blog. Blogger helped me develop my skills and by the end of the year I was confident about using Blogger and knew how to work it and structure my work clearly.

For the two projects we were given, One being the College magazine and the second being the Music Magazine, to make the magazines we needed photos and to take the photos we used the Vivitar 8 megapixel cameras. Using the camera was quite difficult at first but I soon learnt how to use it. It took me a couple of photos to get the pictures I wanted and learnt different techniques on how to take the photo. I learnt how to change the camera settings to make the camera turn black and white to very colourful. Shooting was very easy and different kind of shots gave the photos different affects such as tilting the camera slightly to create an edge of uneasiness and disorientation. After taking the photos I then uploaded them onto my blog and then could start to Photoshop them. Photoshop was a great help and allowed me to make my pictures better and edit things out that I don't want in my picture such as red eyes, Backgrounds and also things that did not fit in the scene. Once I had gotten rid of everything in the photo that I did not want I then went on to add things to the photo which I though was appropriate such as extra lighting or making the scene darker. After making changes to the photos I then could develop my skills that I had learnt in class and though demonstrations by the teachers to start to construct my magazine. From using the scanner I knew exactly where I wanted things to go in my magazine so I knew what parts of my picture would be covered. Most of my pictures were quite central so I did not have this problem. I then could edit in backgrounds and effects to the magazine. I used the codes of conventions in my magazine so this had an effect on my decision making because I needed to my magazine not to look identical but have the similarities of other magazines such as a front cover with a Masthead. All the way though producing my magazine I had to think of how the use of Digital technologies could help me with my decision making as I knew that I could always improve on my work with the skills I had learnt with Blogger, cameras and Photoshop.

The History of the Music Video

Music Videos have only come about in the 20th century but were most prominent
during the 1980’s until the present day.  Everyone today knows of a song which they know the music video to that song.  Music videos are a multi-million pound industry today but if you look back 50 years or so the music video was a totally new thing and was used only to promote artists.  People tried to put moving images and still images to music to create a Narrative this was before the 1920's and the earliest form of this was dated back to 1894. Between the period of 1894- 1950 most people would have to see the artist perform live and only small short videos of performances were ever made. During the 1950's the film industry was full with musical films so films started to use performance alongside the music. The 1960's saw the rise of the Music video, This was when bands tried to use the music video to try and promote themselves.

The Beatles were the first band to exploit the music video and were involved in many music videos ever since. In 1964 the Beatles made a documentary style film called "A Hard Day's Night and this saw the band performing but in a music video format. It is all set in black and white and tries to show how successful the Beatles was back when they was in their adolescence. This clip below shows how Music videos was back in the early 1960's.

This is a 1966 video by Bob Dylan. The video is very primitive and See's Bob Dylan with numerous cards which were in synch with the music video. The video isn't in a studio but a dirty suburb of what looks like an industrial part of a city.. Bob Dylan appears in the video showing his importance as a performer, The video is different because it does not have the artist singing in it, But he is performing which adds to the realism.

During the 1960's the BBC introduced the Top of the pops were bands and singers could perform to an audience, often it would be lip synced but this meant that artists could get there songs out to the audience and this lead to people wanting to see more from artists meaning that people would like to see them perform in a music video so it became very popular to do so. But It was not till the 1980's until people started to really know they had to make music videos to become a success. Music videos were aimed at making money and to make the band or singer popular in the music industry and also today Music videos can send out a message about the society or the views and opinions of the artist, These can be integrated in the song. In the 1970's people were experimenting more with music videos just as the Beatles did so with their "HARD DAYS NIGHT".

This video is below is a common music video from the early 1970's and this music video sees the band The Mixtures play In the summertime. It is still shot in black and white because most people did not have access to coloured Television sets.

During the 1980's people knew how to exploit the form of music videos and knew of all the codes and conventions that we now use today in our music videos, this helped producers and artists to make well made music videos. Madonna had all ready become popular and was well known for her music videos. The 80's was full of new fashions and women were becoming more accepted into the male orientated world. Madonna had made this video Lucky Star. Artists at this time showed more performance and sang along to the song. Mostly all music videos in the 1980's music videos were in colour now, Unless they wanted the vintage look.

This music video is of R.E.M Loosing my Religion a video and it was released in 1991and caused controversy though the world because a song was talking about religion but the music video had meaning and when people watched the music video they understood the song better. The Video has a sense of Narcism and self love. The lyrics can be interpreted in many ways and people can interprate the songs in many ways. It is a music video with a lot of self expression. You would not of been able to have been able to have made a song or music video like this in the 1950's because the society would of not accepted it because it would of gone against most peoples religion but by the 1990's personal expression and free will was more common so more people had a choice in which religion they wanted to follow or even not follow any at all. This showing that society had changed.

The 2000's saw a massive increase in music video production and most artists made music videos alongside their song.  Many artists had become well known because of their music videos. Making a music video is like a blank canvas and just like they did back in the 1960's they had to come up with new ideas and though the History of Music videos we can now see what works and what does not work. Artists can express themselves though their music videos and create an illusion and grip audiences. In the 1960's Music videos were a new thing but now in the 2010's a new video release is treat like a blockbuster release. Lady Gaga is one of the latest famous artists with millions of hits on the Video networking Site "You tube"

The Internet has become a new form of showing music videos on and advertising Music videos. Since the early 2000's music videos have been uploaded and shared though networking sites such as "Facbook, My Space and the dominant is You Tube" These are all free and allow artists and record companies to advertise and show music videos and make the music video a success and make people want to download and buy the track. Itunes gained from this form of advertising as they can work in partnership with the record companies and the music videos and let people buy the song and download the video.
